ANNE VAN HOEY~
I love these origami-like pieces... circles becoming squares or triangles. Even though I am a junky for texture, I like the serenity of the smooth, vitrified surfaces of most of her pots. I like that the color of the clay body is usually the favored decoration.
Since visiting Japan, this Belgian artist has taken the folding techniques of origami and applied them to thin sheets of rolled clay.
Van Hoey assembles these thin slabs in a hemispherical slump mold, then joins and smooths them to erase the seams. After all pieces are joined she makes strategic cuts, applies slip and coaxes them in to the fabulous shapes you see. She makes purely functional items to decorative to closed sculptural forms.
