I spent a week at Arrowmont in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. A slice of heaven for artists who go there. I made new friends...GREAT friends, learned new skills and created career changing work. Thanks goodness my summer plans to go to Scotland got waylaid and I went to Arrowmont instead! Our instructor was (Queen of the Bun-Buns) Kate Maury. She has instilled such confidence in my skills and creativity and encouraged me to do things I am to reticent to do. She is MY HERO! Our assistant was Josh Shorey. A mold makin' genious and the only guy in our group. He weathered us ladies well. I am encouraged, also, by his kind words and helpfulness. "On the Road with the Shorey/Maury Show"
My classmates are genius at making. Cornelia Cho, Lizzy Howell, Donna Covert and April Wright were all encouraging and so, so sweet. I relished our class-time and meals together. We had a pediatrician, an architect, a Bio-Chem professor and a newly minted grad student (on her way to U. Kentucky) among us, they are all BAD-ASS MAKERS and (hopefully) life-long friends!
Author~ Susan Speck: I love everything about clay. I like making, teaching, looking at, owning and using pots. This blog is a continuation of my Facebook posts that have been going on since the day after the disappointing 2016 election. I [we] needed to have something good to see and think about.
