September 25, 2017...Last Saturday Was A Banner Day!

MILES OF TILES AND THE START OF A NEW STUDIO!~

What a day!  I got my overhead garage doors taken out and the new 'wall of glass' doors installed!  Also the south window unit!  Lots of light for the new studio!  All done by Donnie and Dallas of Synergy Construction Company, Inc. owned by Jan (Yan)Duncan!  http://synergykc.com/

While waiting for all this I decided to make tiles for the wall.  Uh, WOW!  I love them!
...AND 'glaze guru', Pete Pinnell helped me out with advice for my glaze dilemma.  I am testing today to see if it works.  Crossing fingers!

September 22, 2017...Glaze Test Results

Somewhat Ho Hum~

I made a lot of glaze on Wednesday and the results were pretty good...lot of nice greens to blues.  BUT!...I still can't come up with the last one in the bunch in the images...that LOVELY chartreuse! (image 8)
The label (image 8) on the back tells me it is Higby Water base with Red Iron Oxide.  I've made 100 grams and added RIO in various amounts, but no Chartreuse.  This time I added (last tile in image 7)Praseodymium Yellow stain and a bit of Copper Carb (.5%).  Too BLUE GREEN!

DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEAS???

GLAZES I AM LOOKING FOR~

I don't have much time today to make work and take care of it, so I am going to make glazes.  Some Higby Water glazes. I need to make more HW Blue and test some HW Clear and HW with Cobalt and maybe RIOx.

If anyone has some ^6 transparent glazes that break nicely, send me the recipe!!!!

September 18...The NO CLAY day was yesterday!!

IT IS CLAY DAY TODAY!

I was going to make and test some glazes today, but I needed a new type of funk-tional ware.  I decided on a jar...with a lid.  This was fun to make and a little bit of a challenge.  There are a few things I will tweek...thickness of the lid lip...taller/bigger.  After dinner I am going to make a larger one! Wish me luck!
Oh yeah, here is a link to a YouTube video I loaded of the finished product.

I did take some bisque ware out of the kiln...

Lost an entire day of doing anything with clay...kinda nice.
I got to play with my pipe band, KC St. Andrew Pipes and Drums at half time of the Kansas City Chiefs vs Philly Eagles yesterday.  I have done that 3 times now and it was still a rush to be on the field and 'part of the action'.  Had so much fun with band mates on a WINNING day at ARROWHEAD STADIUM.

Not Sure What to Call These Things...

At the moment I am calling them Wall Bowls.  If you have a better suggestion please do tell.
All from press molded slabs, even the birds.  I can't wait to get some glaze on these babies!

WHEW~

So pleased with this last firing!  I miss the touch of red, but may add that next.  Gotta mix up some RPPM (Red-Pink-Purple-Mauve; what a name!)
This is my first glazing foray with the press molded  pieces.  I found some cheap pouring molds a few months back.  I decided to try what I learned at Arrowmont, by pressing my textured and underglazed slabs into the mold.  It worked!
Now for the last step...gold luster details!

    Susan Speck:
I love everything about clay.  I like making, teaching, looking at, owning and using pots.  This blog is a continuation of my Facebook posts that have been going on since the day after the disappointing 2016 election.  I [we] needed to have something good to see and think about.

Write something about yourself. No need to be fancy, just an overview.
