RYAN McDONNELL~

This is Ryan's first KC Clay Guild Teabowl National and he had some marvelous entries.  His accepted teabowl is the first in his gallery.   I really love his glazed surfaces...yummy woodfired things!
   Ryan lives in the DC area and is the Ceramics & Sculpture Studio Coordinator at George Washington University.  He has taught in DC public schools and at the Corcoran School of Art and Design in DC.

SCOTT STEDER~

Scott is a multi-year participant in Teabowl National with 6 teabowls exhibited, all on the first three rows...starting with 2017 as the first in his gallery.
   Scott is an obvious wood firer and teabowl maker.  I love those woodfired drips, shell markings and flashes. Delicious!!! 
   Scott graduated in May 2016, with an MFA in Ceramics from  Wichita State Uni and had work in the Regional Student Juried Exhibition.  He also "received a fellowship from the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts to create a database of local clays.  While traveling across Kansas to map out different clays, Steder also tested them for porosity, water absorption and shrinkage." RICH FARROW~

Rich is a two time participant in KC Clay Guild Teabowl National.  This year's teabowl and 2015  are  the first and second in his gallery.   Amazing altered surfaces!
   He creates most of his work in high fire, thrown porcelain and stoneware.   
   Rich is a part-time studio potter, but is also an instructor at the Wayne Art Center and  conducts workshops there as well.  He is also a member of the Wallingford (PA) Potter's Guild

ROBERT LAWARRE III~

Rob is a three time veteran of Teabowl National.  His accepted teabowls from 2017, 2015 and 2014 are the first four in his gallery. He does amazing things with surface and form.  I think his pieces are ALIVE!
   I first saw his work when I juried in his two 'faced' cups in 'TWIN CUPS'.  He work in various types of clay and firing methods.  You will HAVE to check out his website (below) to see ALL of it.
   He has work in galleries across the US, Europe and Asia.  He has conducted workshops all over as well.  This guy is a-mazing!  I was honored to organize a 2016, Kansas City, NCECA show that included us and Marko Fields.

MICHAEL ASHLEY~

This is Missouri native, Michael Ashley's third time in KC Clay Guild Teabowl National.  HIs two accepted pieces are in the first row of his gallery.  I love the free and layered surfaces of his work...Pollock-eseque! 
   He graduated from the School of the Ozarks, then did a one year residency at Tainan National University for the Arts.  He earned an MFA from the Uni. of Mississippi, taught at Missouri State University, the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University and Tyler School of Art Temple Uni. He and his wife are the owners of Ashley Pottery Studio in Tupelo, Mississippi.

RENEE McKITTERICK~

Renee is a first time participant in Teabowl National.  Her entries are first three teabowls in her gallery, with her accepted piece the first on the left. I love the yummy woodfired, carved surfaces that embellish the simple forms.
   She was raised in Ohio and attended Ohio State, earning a BFA. She holds an MFA from the Uni. of New Mexico.  She taught at UNM for 3 years before attending the Pottery Workshop in Jingdezhen, China in 2015.  She now teaches at Linn-Benton Community College in Oregon.

MATTHEW GADDIE~

This is Matthew's 2nd time in KC Clay Guild Teabowl National and I am glad his work is back!  His 2017 accepted piece is the first in his gallery.  His previously accepted piece (2012) is the next one on the first row.  He creates delicious utilitarian wood-fired work on his family farm (The Meadows) in Kentucky.  
   He holds an MA and MFA from Hood College in Maryland.  He is a kiln builder and is active in Kentucky and other regional exhibits and galleries.

MIA ISHIGURO~

This is Mia's first time in Teabowl National.  Her accepted piece is the first one in her gallery.  Her other entries are to it's right...all beautiful. 
   Mia wood-fires, but has recently began making work for colorful mid-range firings.  She creates utilitarian work as well as sculptural pieces.  Born in Japan, she was trained as a graphic artist.  She moved to the Chicago area, founding an event display company.  See more of her wonderful work at:

MARINA SMELIK~

Marina is a newcomer to KC Clay Guild Teabowl National.  Her accepted piece is  the first one in her gallery.  She leaves the natural clay and only underglazes the floral elements. The illustration on here pieces is amazing!  
   Marina is a ceramics instructor and an accomplished stone carver.  She was born in Vladivostok, in the former Soviet Union and studied biology.  She began illustrating biology texts and designing biological exhibitions.

MARK JOHNSON~

This is also Mark's first Teabowl National.  The first teabowl in his gallery is his accepted piece.  His surfaces are luscious...glazed and left bare for the soda firing to do it's magic.  YUM!
   Mark works in white stoneware, creating all but his teabowls and tumblers by piecing together thrown parts.  Then, of course, her soda fires his work.
   Mark is the Professor of Ceramics & Foundation at the Maine College of Art.  He has been a Resident at the Bray and Watershed, been featured in numerous publications.  Please read more about Mark on his website:

LEAH GUERIN~

Leah is a first time artist in KC Clay Guild Teabowl National.  Her accepted entries are thrown, but she also handbuilds. 
   She illustrates her work with whimsical patterns, layered colors, sea & woodland creatures...and robots.   Leah uses ^6 porcelain, underglaze, glaze and fires in oxidation to create her fabulous work!

LIN WERNER~

This is Lin's second appearance in Teabowl National.  This year's accepted piece is the first in her gallery...followed by her 2 accepted pieces from 2016.  
   She creates with ^10 porcelain and fires in reduction.  She is a member of the Missouri Western State University Potters Guild in St. Joseph.  She is active in the St. Joe area art scene,  participating in 'Twin Cups' at MWSU and the Albrecht-Kemper Museum Members show.  
Oh Wow! I saw on her FB page that she sculls.  We have something in common besides pots!

LAURYN AXELROD~

This is Lauryn's second time in KC Clay Guild Teabowl National.  Her entry for this year is the first in her gallery.  Last years teabowl is to it's right.   She creates wonderful, simple forms and lets the kiln gods create surfaces...organic, raw, with  atmospheric blushes!

LAYNE PETERS~

Layne is a first timer in Teabowl National and his teabowls are the first ones in his gallery.  Like Lauryn, he is influenced by Japanese ceramics. 
   He throws and alters stoneware or porcelain, adds brushed slip, finger marks and glaze.  Layne has been around pots his entire life, wedging clay for his dad and now a potter himself.

KATRIONA DRIJBER~

Katriona is a first time participant in the Teabowl National.  Her accepted pieces are the first two in her gallery.  From viewing her webpage, I assume she likes working in series and experimenting with various form and surface embellishment.  All are wonderful!  
   Katriona is from the Rocky Mountains of Alberta, Canada.  She was a Resident at the Bray and currently lives in Logan, Utah.  She has work at several US shows, including the Yunomi Invitational at Akar

   Kate lives in the Kansas City area and teaches as an adjunct as two local colleges.  She also operates her own work and teaching studio called NEAT!

JOHN REINKING~

John has been a KC Clay Guild Teabowls National artist EVERY year (2010-2017) with 11 teabowls accepted.  I do believe he has the record for both number of years and number of teabowls! His accepted piece is the first in his gallery. 
   John calls his work 'rustic and straight forward'.  HIs pieces are wood fired to 'emphasize their rugged honesty'. 
   He holds an BFA and MFA from Rutgers & Marywood University, respectively.  He is the Head of Ceramics at the  Center for Contemporary Art and Instructor & Ceramics Technician at Raritan Valley Comm College.

JUSTIN ROTHSHANK~

This is Justin's first time in Teabowl National.  His two accepted pieces are the first two in his gallery.  Always lusciously loose  in form and embellishment, his work is always a treat for me.  After viewing his website, I am particularly fond of the darker work, right/center row.
   He has been a Ceramics Monthly Emerging Artist, an American Craft Council awardee and presents workshops throughout the country. 
   He also co-founded the Union Project, a community based, restored historical space whose 'work...centers on the power of arts to transform.'

CINDY PERCIVAL~

This is Cindy's first foray into KC Clay Guild Teabowl National.  He accepted piece is the first one in her gallery.  I especially like the calming surface of this piece.  She works in high fire stoneware and porcelain
